Akiyama graduated from Setsu
Mode Seminar in 1976 and went to work for Issey Miyake in 1978. He remained there
until 1997, when he left to set up A Works Studio. He signed a contract with Sanyo
Shokai in 1999 and became chief designer of coat division. The brand FUMIO was
established in 2003 and debuted at the 2004 Spring/Summer Tokyo Collections.
