Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO 2026 SS Monday 9/1 Report

Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO 2026 SS Monday 9/1 Report

Today marked the first day of the 2026 S/S season for Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO (Rakuten FWT) (organized by the Japan Fashion Week Organization (JFWO)).

The top prize for the JFW NEXT BRAND AWARD 2026 Grand Prix. claimed by “mukcyen” (from 1:00 PM) Shibuya Hikarie, Hikarie Hall, Hall A

“mukcyen,” winner of the Grand Prix at the JFW NEXT BRAND AWARD 2026, held her first ever show. Born in 1998, Yuka Kimura is a Gen-Z designer with a powerful voice who has been highly regarded for her unique worldview, which stems from her refined sense of self.

The inspiration for the collection came from a prophecy that made headlines in Japan and Asia predicting an immense catastrophe in July of 2025. The fear of the future and the potential end of the world led her to ground her creative work in “everyday life.” The brand’s signature second skinwear revealed the lines of the body, with soft colors, diagonal gathers, and pockmarked holes that gave a somewhat effortless appearance.

Doomsday could come at any moment. What if it happens while you’re sleeping? What if it’s when you go out to eat after work? With these thoughts in mind, mukcyen says she focused more on practicality than ever before. She paired a short corset with a sweatshirt that felt like loungewear, or had arms projecting through a layered torso to evoke the appearance of broken bones. mukcyen’s signature darkness blended with the doomsday lurking just beyond everyday life to create a mood you might call “emergency sensuality.”

Having received the award, designer Kimura expressed her desire to reach a global audience going forward. She said that she wants to create “things that are good for women,” starting with second skinwear with skincare functions, which has been a focus for her this season.

någonstans (from 5:00 PM)
Brillia Running Stadium

Participating for the first time, någonstans chose the theme of “Mountain Trail,” inspired by designer Mizuki Ueda’s love of nature. Through color and form, the designer expressed the tranquility felt while walking mountain trails and the scenery that meets the eye.

The unexpected color palettes found in nature, such as the pale gray of rock surfaces in summer and delicate alpine plants, were incorporated into items with a bold balance characteristic of någonstans. Items printed with the works of painter Mitsuko Hanyu made the scenery of the collection even more vivid.

Making extensive use of bonded materials, which softly accentuated the three-dimensional silhouettes and sporty sheer materials, the show effortlessly brought to life the free-flowing forms characteristic of the brand.

Designer Ueda spoke of her first impressions of the show saying, “This is a show I’ve always wanted to do. I hope that by taking part in Fashion Week I can convey the appeal of the brand to people who are not yet familiar.”

Shibuya Hikarie Hikarie Hall Hall B

The FASHION PRIZE OF TOKYO 2026 winner announcement ceremony and special installation were held. The Grand Prize winner this year was “YOKE,” founded by designer Norio Terada. The installation screened the brand’s latest looks, sources of inspiration, and a video shot in Hokkaido.

The four judges appeared at the awards ceremony. Yukari Negishi, Executive Officer of LITTLE LEAGUE COMPANY and Creative Director of Women’s Wear at Ron Herman, spoke on behalf of the judges and explained the reasons for the award, saying, “We felt they had made steady progress. We felt that this was the perfect time for them to become a bridge between Japan and the rest of the world.”

Upon receiving the award, designer Terada commented, “I am honored to have received the TOKYO FASHION AWARD 2022 and held my last show in Tokyo in AW23. Over the past two years, I have become aware of my own shortcomings and have strengthened my creativity. Through my exhibition in Paris, I feel that Japanese materials and sewing techniques are expanding in the world, so I would like to demonstrate how I can share more through YOKE at the upcoming Paris show.”

Comedian Masao Yoshii, a regular YOKE wearer, took the stage as emcee, making for a hilarious and slightly different award announcement ceremony.

YOKE will hold its first-ever show in Paris in January next year with the support of the FASHION PRIZE OF TOKYO.
