Brand information / About the designer
―What inspired you to become a fashion designer? Describe developments leading up to the brand launch.
Introduced to the world of fashion, designers, models in high school through the internet and magazines, and wanted to become a stylist/designer ever since. Studied at London College of Fashion and launched my label after winning Emerging Designer of the Year of Niche Magazine in September 2014.
―What is the brand’s concept? What do you want to communicate through fashion designing? What are the images of men and women you want to project?
I want to bring joy and an element of dreaming through my designs, and to convey the idea that it is okay to have some fun and not be too serious all the time.
―What is your source of inspiration in creating fashion? What is your process of developing a design concept?
Teenage Subcultures, contemporary arts and modern films are my main sources of inspiration.
―Who are your current stockists (areas, retail formats, etc.)? Describe the typical followers of your brand.
Stockists are : Wear That Walk (London), Drake General Store (Toronto), Platform (Vancouver), Chainloop (Taipei), ALEX S. YU Online Shops & Pop up Shops. Fans of ALEX S. YU are people who dream.
―Which brands, designers, styles and cultures have had the most impact on your fashion designing, and why?
Rei Kawakubo has affected me a lot as a designer. I admire her creativity and sense of business.
About 2018 S/S collection
―Why have you chosen Tokyo(Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO) as the venue for presenting your collection?
It was an opportunity presented to me from Vancouver Fashion Week, and through the show at Tokyo Fashion Week, I wish that more people in Japan/Asia will know the brand – ALEX S. YU.
―What is the concept / image for your brand’s 2018 S/S season?
The SS2018 collection is called The Vacant Chaos, and it is inspired by teenage summer camps and the movie, The Virgin Suicides by Sofia Coppola.
―What is your vision for your show / installation?
I want people to feel a sense of joy and happiness after the show.

―What are your brand’s future outlook and goal?
I wish that ALEX S. YU will be popular all over the world.
About TOKYO
―What does Tokyo represent for you?
A city that is both modern yet traditional, very fast paced but also relaxed. One of my favourite cities in the world.
―Which parts / sites of Tokyo do you like most? Why?
My favorite area is Shimokitazawa and Kouenji. I especially enjoy the small cafes, vintage stores and the izakaya at nights.
―What are your favorite / recommended shops (of any genres, e.g. fashion stores, homeware stores, food services), facilities and sites?
”Dover Street Market” in Ginza, ”DESIGN FESTA GALLERY” in Ura Harajuku, ”21_21 DESIGN SIGHT” in Tokyo Midtown are some of my favorite spots. My favorite food would be the Melon Pan from ”Kagetsudou” in Asakusa.
