Brand information / About the designer
―What inspired you to become a fashion designer? Describe developments leading up to the brand launch.
Fashion has always been an extreme passion of mine. I graduated from Blanche MacDonald Centre in Vancouver, Canada in 2011 and launched my eponymous label in 2013. SS18 commemorates my labels tenth season in business.
―What is the brand’s concept? What do you want to communicate through fashion designing? What are the images of men and women you want to project?
The most important aspect of my brand as a consistent and honest commitment to brand identity. I like to think of my work as autobiographical, and each collection is a reflection of my world views a the time of its inception.
―What is your source of inspiration in creating fashion? What is your process of developing a design concept?
I actually have a really hard time culling inspiration each season because I find it very easy to get inspired! I see beauty in so many parts of the world and embrace all of it, even the ugly parts. I used to design and purge my inspirations seasonally, but recently I’ve been finding it very easy to vibe into everything that I’m inspired by!
―Who are your current stockists (areas, retail formats, etc.)? Describe the typical followers of your brand.
Currently my seasonal collections are available on my website (evanclayton.ca), and I do a lot of custom work. My client is somebody who is bold and unafraid to explore different facets of her personal style.
―Which brands, designers, styles and cultures have had the most impact on your fashion designing, and why?
I grew up totally hooked on Japanese culture, and a lot of that permeates into my work. In terms of design, I’m extremely inspired byAlexander McQueen, Nicolas Ghesquiere, and Tom Ford.
About 2018 S/S collection
―Why have you chosen Tokyo(Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO) as the venue for presenting your collection?
It has been a dream of mine to show my work in Japan since I started my line, so this is an opportunity I am very excited about!
―What is the concept / image for your brand’s 2018 S/S season?
I initially started this season as a conceptless collection as a way for me to strictly explore the way my clothing interacts with my clients. As time went on, various inspirations leaked into the collection, so you’ll see a bit of Joanne, a bit of Persona 5, a bit of Final Fantasy. It’s an eclectic mix, but I believe in it.
―What is your vision for your show / installation?
I see a lot of colour in this presentation, but also mixed with a lot of stark black and white.
Future
―What are your brand’s future outlook and goal?
I would love to see the worldwide expansion of EVAN CLAYTON! As long as I keep getting to create and express, I’m a happy guy!
About TOKYO
―What does Tokyo represent for you?
Tokyo represents a unique fusion of tradition and future.
―Which parts / sites of Tokyo do you like most? Why?
Having never been to Tokyo, I’m very excited to see it! I’m most excited to visit Shibuya and Harajuku, however, I’m hoping to travel around the country a bit while I’m here!
―What are your favorite / recommended shops (of any genres, e.g. fashion stores, homeware stores, food services), facilities and sites?
I’ve heard nothing but positive things about DOG in Harajuku, and I can’t wait to make a visit!
