Brand information / About the designer

―What inspired you to become a fashion designer? Describe developments leading up to the brand launch.

Design or art-related objects always amazed me ever since I was in high school, that’s when I started to have interest in fashion design.

―What is the brand’s concept? What do you want to communicate through fashion designing?

Blue and white collection only. These two colors comfort people and we would like to use them exclusively. Blue is especially cool and reflects natural beauty.

―What is your source of inspiration in creating fashion? What is your process of developing a design concept?

I am constantly inspired by music. One of my signatures is the use of traditional silk screening techniques to develop prints on pieces and design collections exclusively with shades of blue and white.

―Who are your current stockists (areas, retail formats, etc.)? Describe the typical followers of your brand.

We are currently selling at highly selective lifestyle and fashion boutiques in Hong Kong – Kapok, Konzepp, Wow Walk On Water, GumGumGum and the official online store: www.kathylam.info. The selected boutiques have good followers who are fascisnated by art and design.

―Which brands, designers, styles and cultures have had the most impact on your fashion designing, and why?

Every designer’s work is unique and I look into a lot of vintage fashion clothing. Without yesterday, there is no tomorrow, right?

―Do you have any aspirations or mottoes or quotes that inspires you?

Fashioning the future and thinking about all the possibilities.

About 2016 S/S collection

―Why have you chosen Tokyo (or MBFWT) as the venue for presenting your collection?

Tokyo is the leading fashion city in Asia and my brand’s image is suitable for Japanese fashion.

―What is the concept / image for your brand’s 2016 S/S season?

The collection that I’m bringing to TKYFW is called “Lorelei”. It is inspired by Cocteau Twins – a Scottish band that active from the late 70s-90s and the name was taken from their album “Treasure” (1984). Inspired by the band’s dreamscape instrumentation and lead singer Elizabeth Fraser’s distinctic vocal, especially in glossolalia and mouth music, Lorelei is a collection with blurry, random floral digital prints and geometric star patterns.

―What is your vision for your show / installation?

We will present our collection at the Fashion Hong Kong show, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. I hope that you can catch the beat of my collection.

Future

―What are your brand’s future outlook and goal?

Our short-term goal is to enter some selective brand stores that is representative in Japan, for instance Opening Ceremony and Delta. We hope that our brand can grow to be more international with expansion in New York, London and other fashion capitals.

About TOKYO

―What does Tokyo represent for you?

Neat, modern and forward-thinking.

―Which parts / sites of Tokyo do you like most? Why?

Roppongi, because it is not too crowded and has a very nice atmosphere.

―What are your favorite / recommended shops (of any genres, e.g. fashion stores, homeware stores, food services), facilities and sites?

Suzuki, it is a small cigarette shop in Tokyo as they have a shibainu as a shopkeeper, “he” will open the door to welcome “his” customers. Since I have a shibainu and this is the smartest shibainu I have ever come across.
